亚瑟（特伦斯·斯坦普 Terence Stamp 饰）的妻子玛丽昂（瓦妮莎·雷德格瑞夫 Vanessa Redgrave 饰）虽然身患绝症，却一直坚持参加小镇上的老年合唱团。这个由年轻音乐教师伊丽莎白（杰玛·阿特登 Gemma Arterton 饰）在工作之余组织起来的合唱团不仅是镇上老年人们消磨时光的好去处，更为他们结交新朋友提供了机会。可是固执的亚瑟并不支持也不理解玛丽昂唱歌，他只希望爱妻可以安心在家养病。但亚瑟终归执拗不过玛丽昂，即使在生命最后的时光里，玛丽昂也如愿参加了合唱比赛。小镇的老年合唱团通过了比赛的初赛，玛丽昂在赛后安详去世。虽然伊丽莎白和其他老人都想帮助亚瑟走出悲伤，但倔强的亚瑟不仅将他们拒之千里之外，甚至对亲生儿子詹姆斯（克里斯托弗·埃克莱斯顿 Christopher Eccleston 饰）都恶言相加。亚瑟本打算将自己永久关闭在失去爱妻的悲痛之中，但几次与伊丽莎白意外的对话让他慢慢理解了玛丽昂生前对合唱团热爱的原因，也开始反思自己与儿子之间的关系。渐渐的，亚瑟好像敞开了心扉。他决心为了去世的玛丽昂开始迎接新生活。
